Before there was porno-tumblr and sexually liberating Instagram accounts there was Robert Mapplethorpe. Not only was he BDSM gay, Patti Smiths BFF, (quote;) a sexual outlaw and selfie queen but also a visual artist/photographer. His aesthetics and subjects of interest are interesting to me. Not only because I like to photograph similar subject matters but also because his story is beautiful and liberating. My time as single 20-something has taught me much about todays “game”. The sexual stigma is slowly but steadily becoming less and less. Women (if they want to) can literally get a new sexual partner every day male or female! The question is how picky she is with how much STDs she wants <joking>. But, really. That is a very short and rough (pun intended) summation of my interpretation on current single-life-scene.

Robert left behind a gallery/portfolio that I personally always will associate with living-in-the-now-wild-child-cool-kid. One might not think so if one doesn’t know the photographers story and just sees his work. His interpretation of masculine and feminine I find really attractive, and I agree. It’s not androgynous. It is this or that. Maybe it was a way for him to get some sort of zen regarding his own identity and sexuality. That can be a valid theory. I know that’s many times how I use photography as; a way to be extroverted with things that I keep introverted. Anyway, I would interpret his work as an elegant slap on the ass. Beautiful lines with feminine shapes but using subjects that even today can be categorised as controversial for some.
